The Zodiac Killer – Putting the Case Together

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

There have always been questions about the authenticity of Zodiac evidence compiled by police since the beginning of the Zodiac serial killer case. The Zodiac case dealt with numerous bits and pieces of evidence that the serial killer sent in to police and newspapers. Since the evidence could not be linked together in any tangible way that made sense to investigators, there was no conclusive way to determine if all the evidence was produced by the Zodiac or if other individuals were involved in the evidence stream.

I am pleased to announce that I have tied in three separate major pieces of the Zodiac evidence stream and will prove that the evidence was authored by one sole individual, the Zodiac himself. It was a long journey getting to this point, and I hope that readers of this site enjoy the work that I have produced about the Zodiac case.

To put it all together, we must first look at the Zodiac evidence timeline and the evidence that will be used in this briefing. Then I will explain how all of the evidence is tied together with one document that the Zodiac used as part of his serial killing operation. This information can be used freely by law enforcement working on the Zodiac case and for training purposes. Please quote OPORD Analytical on all documents in which this work will appear with links back to this site as a courtesy.

The Zodiac mailed in the “My Name Is” cipher with a bomb diagram.

The solution to the “My Name Is” cipher is:

A Train H Blood M

The linked page above that contains the cipher solution that I completed theorized that the Zodiac used numeric values for the “H” and the “M” in the cipher solution. Using the alphabet, the numeric values for “H” and “M” are 8 and 13 respectively. The 813 was then theorized to be a chapter and verse of the 66th Book of the Holy Bible, the Book of Revelations.

From Revelations Chapter 8, Verse 13:

“Then I looked, and I heard an eagle flying in mid-heaven, saying with a loud voice, "Woe! woe! woe! to those who dwell on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!”

This clue tied in with the fact that the Zodiac used a Phillips 66 map which he mailed a segment to police. 66 = the 66th book of the Holy Bible and the 813 from the “My Name Is” cipher solution = Chapter 8, Verse 13 in the Book of Revelations.

However, the “H” and the “M” in the “My Name Is” cipher solution also have another, stunning meaning. We will get to that in a moment. First, we will look at the bomb diagram again that the Zodiac included with his “My Name Is” cipher.

At the top of the bomb diagram, the Zodiac writes, “Sun light in early morning”. This is a clue given by the Zodiac to orientate the map to the east, because the sun rises in the east. Using Google Earth, I punched in “813 MT Diablo CT”. Mt. Diablo CT in Lafayette is on the same horizontal azimuth as Mount Diablo, the location that Zodiac drew his compass rose on the map he mailed in with the “Button Cipher”. Incredibly, this is what Google Earth returned when I did so.

See it? If not, let’s look closer together and do a comparison.

The Google Earth image is perfectly aligned to the East, just as the Zodiac’s bomb diagram is aligned per his instructions. But since the Zodiac wasn’t a bomber, what was his purpose in selecting this location? It is a rest area which is now known as the “Hungry Hunter” restaurant off the interstate. The Zodiac was submitting a diagram telling police that he was hunting in locations such as rest areas off the highway.

June 26, 1970

The Zodiac mailed in his “Button Letter” with a segment of a “Phillips 66” map, the type of map that you could purchase at Phillips 66 gas stations that unfold. This is the image of the map that the Zodiac mailed in.

In order to work a case such as the Zodiac case, it is important to work with the same materials that the serial killer did in order to see if any of the clues that the Zodiac left for investigators could be tied in with what the Zodiac had available to him. In this case, it did tie in. With the help of a friend from California law enforcement, a Phillips 66 map of the same era as the Zodiac’s was located. That map is scanned below in the final segment of the briefing with an explanation of what the Zodiac used it for. First however, we must add the next evidence stream to put the case together.

October 27, 1970

The Zodiac mailed in his Halloween Card.

                                                                                            Front                                                                                                                Back

Now that all of the evidence is compiled, it is time to put it all together. The Halloween card that Zodiac mailed in to police gives really good clues. Let’s examine them.

The first clue on the front of the card is the word “paradice”. Using the Zodiac’s Phillip’s 66 map, the complete and unaltered map, there is a “Paradise Drive” in Tiburon, California.

On the back of the Zodiac’s Halloween card, there are images of eyes in the left column of the card in the same location as the word “paradice” on the front of the card. Using a scan of the QQ code Phillip’s 66 map that the Zodiac used which was printed in 1969, the evidence becomes crystal clear as to the clue that the Zodiac gives to police. The left side of the Phillip’s 66 map has one remarkable feature:

The original Phillips 66 map that the Zodiac used doesn’t have an “I” in its left-hand column on the map. It has an A thru H, and then a J thru Q! This is a clue by the Zodiac to use the Phillips 66 map with the information that he submitted to the police and the newspapers in association with the Halloween card clue using the “eyes”.

Even more spectacular is this:

I couldn’t fit the entire image in my scanner, but this is what I did here. I ran an azimuth from the “H” in the left column center of mass to the “M” in the right column of the Phillips 66 map. Remember that the solution to the “My Name is” cipher was “A Train H Blood M”? The H + M were used by the Zodiac as map coordinates as well as a Holy Bible reference to the Book of Revelations.

I then ran an azimuth from magnetic north on the Phillips 66 map to get a resection anchor point. That 10 digit grid coordinate falls perfectly with “Paradise Cay”, a small docking point in Tiburon for boats. You can see how the magnetic north azimuth for the map goes straight through the Phillips 66 trademark on the azimuth. This was the clue that the Zodiac gave on the front of the Halloween card with the word “paradice”. The complex azimuths that the Zodiac created here is indicative of prior military experience.

Now for the last sequence. Let’s review the back of the Halloween card again.

The skeleton in the Halloween card has both his hands raised as if he is hanging from an invisible line. The skeleton’s feet are waving to the left (the skeleton’s left) as if being pushed by the wind like a sail. The skeleton itself is really a two dimensional image placed over the top of what was written by the Zodiac on the Halloween card. This is an important clue. Using scissors, I removed the skeleton from a copy of the Halloween card and then applied the skeleton to the Phillip’s 66 map using the grid coordinates that the Zodiac provided police with his “H” and “M” clue from the “My Name Is” cipher solution.

This is what appeared:

Now, from the X axis “0” point, the skeleton is shifted to the right 1.2 miles, using the Phillips 66 map legend. Why? The Zodiac tells us to with the clue on the Halloween card indicating wind direction.

  = 8-12 knots (9-14 mph)

 = 13-17 knots (15-20 mph)

Now, using the wind equations we get:

15 – 20 mph

- 9 – 14 mph

------------------

=  6 – 6 mph

            =  6 mph

The answer to the Zodiac’s wind equation puzzle is 6 mph to the South East on the X axis. This would move the skeleton approximately 1.2 miles to the South East along the X axis which would put the sine in the skeleton’s feet (the triangular astrological symbol) directly center of mass of the Naval Net Depot on the map. If you look at the back side of the Halloween card, the skeleton’s left hand is resting on webbing. This is another clue in a long list of clues that the Zodiac’s final destination for the skeleton was the Naval Net Depot on the Phillip’s 66 map.

The Zodiac appears to be giving clues to some important feature in the 3100 + block of Paradise Drive in Tiburon, or possibly a work location at the Naval Net Depot or some other facility. The Zodiac used the Halloween card and his other mailings as a puzzle as to his direct identity, so this location in Tiburon has to be connected to the Zodiac in some way.

Even more importantly, this proves that the “My Name Is” cipher, the “Button Letter” cipher and bomb diagram, and the Halloween card were all produced by the same individual and sent in to the police and the newspapers. It is simply stunning that the “My Name Is” cipher gives the clues H + M which form a perfect X axis in Tiburon to Paradise Cay. From there, the Halloween card which was mailed to police months after the “My Name Is” cipher, not only integrates the cipher solution, but uses it as a topographical map clue that the Zodiac submitted to police as a series of puzzles.

The evidence above was clearly written by the Zodiac and submitted to police by the Zodiac Killer. How the sine location in Tiburon connects to the Zodiac case must be on record somewhere in the investigation, or at a minimum will allow police to reopen the Zodiac case to find out why the Zodiac felt this location was so important.
